Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
A condition caused by repeated pressure that results in damage on the posterior tibial nerve. Your tibial nerve is a branch of your sciatic nerve located in your ankle. Damage of the tibial nerve can happen if the nerve is compressed as a result of consistent pressure and you may experience a shooting pain, tingling or burning among other symptoms.
Rachel Miller is a highly experienced podiatrist who treats many patients for tarsal tunnel syndrome. Please see below if you want more detailed explanation of tarsal tunnel syndrome, its symptoms, causes and treatment.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome
Symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome are often felt on the inside of the ankle and the bottom of the foot. The symptoms can appear suddenly.
Symptoms can include:
- a shooting pain
- pins and needles
- a burning
- an electric shock sensation
Causes of tarsal tunnel syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome may be the result of prolonged standing, walking, exercising or beginning a new exercise program.
Causes can include:
- flat feet or fallen arches
- a previous injury, such as an ankle sprain
- some medical conditions, such as arthritis or diabetes
- some growths, such as varicose veins or cysts
Treatment for tarsal tunnel syndrome
If you do suffer from heel pain and it persists, you should see an experienced podiatrist who can diagnose your condition and give you an appropriate treatment plan. An early diagnosis and treatment is important as the condition may progress and cause nerve damage.
Treatments can include:
The PRICE treatment:
- Protection
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
Other treatments can include:
- footwear advice
- healpads
- self-help advice
- medication
- tailored exercises and stretching regimes
- an orthotic insole
You may benefit from a specialist biomechanical assessment. A bespoke orthotic insole can be prescribed as part of your treatment plan. An orthotic can help stabilise, support and cushion your foot and may reduce pain on impact when walking and running.
